Getting Started with Embedded Sandbox in Bold Reports
The Embed Sandbox is an evaluation playground designed for users to explore Bold Reports and their features within an embedding environment. This article provides an overview of the features and functionalities available in the Embed Sandbox.
When users sign up for the trial, a user account is created using their email ID, and five default reports are added to their account for exploration.
Key Features of Embedded Sandbox
1. Report Management
- Create Report: Users can create their own reports by using the Create button in the sidebar.
- Edit Report: Users can modify and customize existing reports to better suit their needs.
2.Data Source Management
- Default Data Sources: Users can edit or delete the default data sources provided, and they can also create new data sources.
- Create Data Source: Users can create new data sources to import and manage the data displayed in their reports.
- Shared Data Source : Sandbox users can access the AdventureWorks, Northwind and ReportSampleDatabase shared data sources. They can create shared data sources within the designer, but only using these data sources.
- Supported Connections: The Embedded Sandbox supports the following types of connections:
- MSSQL
- Web API
- PostgreSQL
- CSV
- Excel
3.Dataset Management
- Default Dataset: Users can edit or delete the default datasets provided, and they can also create new datasets.
- Create Dataset: Users can create a new dataset using an existing data source or a new data source.
- Shared Dataset: Sandbox users can access the shared datasets CustomerDetail, InvoiceDetails, Sales, and SharedDatasetQueryParameter . They can create shared datasets within the designer, but only based on these datasets.
4. User Permissions
- Report Management: Users can edit and delete default sample reports and create new reports within the specified category, but they cannot create new categories.
Actions in the Embedded Sandbox
View Mode
- When accessing the sandbox for the first time, the report will render in viewer mode.
Report Editing

To edit a report, click the Edit icon that appears when you hover over the report name.

The report will open in the designer mode.
Saving a Report
- Using the Save Button: Users can save changes by clicking the Save button.
Report Preview
- Users can modify and preview the data by clicking the Preview button.
Create a New Report

To create a new report, select the Create button from the sidebar menu, enter a name, and click Save to switch to the design view.

Sandbox Server
- The Sandbox Server option takes users to the sandbox Server, allowing them to explore the Bold Reports server and its features.
Limitations in the Embedded Sandbox
- Report Viewer: Users cannot save or view report views, and they cannot comment on reports.
- Data Source Creation: Limited connection types (MSSQL, Web API, PostgreSQL, CSV, and Excel ) are available. For specific connections, users may need to consider product installation.
Limitations in the Sandbox Server
Restricted Options:
- Certain options, such as sharing permissions, updating, and deleting, are hidden in the default Data Source/Dataset.
- Options like Scheduling are unavailable in the reports listing.
