Optimize Report Performance by Managing Dataset Fields in Bold Reports

Published:
Updated:

In Bold Reports, you can enhance report performance by selecting only the necessary dataset fields in the Query Designer. This practice reduces data retrieval, speeds up report rendering, and minimizes memory usage, resulting in more efficient reports.

Prerequisites

  • Bold Reports Report Designer installed (Web or Standalone version).
  • A report with an existing dataset or a plan to create a new one.

Steps to Manage Dataset Fields in Bold Reports Query Designer

Step 1: Open the Query Designer

  1. Access the Query Designer by:

Step 2: Add a Table to the Query Designer

  1. In the Query Designer, drag and drop the desired table from the left pane onto the design surface. This action loads the table’s structure and displays all available fields.

    Add Table to Query Designer

Step 3: Select Required Fields

  1. Toggle field visibility by clicking the eye icon next to each field:

    • Visible (open eye icon): The field is included in the dataset.
    • Hidden (closed eye icon): The field is excluded from the dataset.
  2. Including only essential fields reduces the dataset size, which improves report load times and performance.

    Select Required Fields

Step 4: Save the Dataset

  1. After selecting the necessary fields, click Finish to save the dataset configuration.

    Finalize Dataset

Conclusion

By selectively enabling dataset fields in Bold Reports’ Query Designer, you can significantly improve report performance, reduce data load, and optimize memory usage. This approach not only enhances rendering speed but also simplifies report maintenance, making it ideal for efficiently managing complex datasets.
