Create a Waterfall Chart Using a Range Column in Bold Reports

Published:
Updated:

Bold Reports Designer does not natively support Waterfall charts. However, you can achieve similar functionality by using a Range Column chart. This chart type visualizes incremental changes by defining start and end values for each data point, making it suitable for scenarios like tracking financial gains and losses, visualizing metric changes over time, or showing cumulative data transitions.

Steps to Create a Waterfall Chart Using a Range Column

Step 1: Add a Range Column Chart

  • In the Bold Reports Designer, drag and drop a Range Column chart from the widget panel onto the report design surface.
  • Bind the chart to your dataset by configuring the appropriate field values.

Step 2: Configure Chart Properties

  • Set the Start and End values for each data point using dataset fields or expressions to reflect incremental changes (for example, opening and closing balances in financial data).
  • Customize the chart’s appearance such as colors, labels, and gridlines from the Properties panel to enhance clarity and mimic a Waterfall chart’s visual style.

Use distinct colors for positive and negative changes (for example, green for increases and red for decreases) to improve readability.

Step 3: Preview and Validate

  • Click Preview to view the chart output in the Bold Reports Designer.
  • Verify that the Range Column chart accurately represents incremental changes and visually aligns with a Waterfall chart.

Tips for Success

  • Data Preparation: Ensure the dataset contains start and end value fields, or calculate them using expressions to reflect cumulative changes.
  • Appearance Customization: Adjust chart properties like bar width, axis labels, and tooltips to enhance clarity and align with Waterfall chart aesthetics.
  • Sample Report: Download the sample report for reference.
  • Use Cases: This approach works well for financial reporting, project progress tracking, and inventory change analysis.

Conclusion

Using the Range Column chart in Bold Reports Designer provides a flexible workaround for creating Waterfall-style visualizations. By configuring start and end values and fine-tuning the chart appearance, you can effectively represent incremental data changes across various reporting scenarios.
