How to Export a Password-Protected Reports in Bold Reports

Bold Reports supports exporting reports to formats such as PDF, Word, and Excel. In many enterprise and compliance‑driven environments, it is important to protect exported reports with a password to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data. Bold Reports allows this by using the DocumentOpenPassword custom property, which ensures that users must enter a password to open the exported document. This article explains how to configure the DocumentOpenPassword custom property to secure exported reports.

Steps to configure the DocumentOpenPassword custom property

Step 1: Access the Custom Attributes Section

  1. Click the gray area outside the report designer canvas to open the Properties panel. Expand the Miscellaneous section and click Set Attributes under Custom attributes.

Step 2: Set the Custom Attribute

  1. In the Custom Attributes dialog box, click Add to create a new attribute.
  2. In the Name field, enter DocumentOpenPassword and then enter your desired password in the Value field. This password will be used to encrypt the exported document and restrict unauthorized access.
  3. Click OK to save the changes.

  1. Click the Preview button in the top toolbar.
