Creating a Report: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a report can be a simple and straightforward process. This guide will walk you through the steps to create a report from scratch, configure the report items, and connect them to your data sources.

Step 1: Creating a Data Source

The first step in creating a report is to establish a data source from which your report will pull its data.

  1. Navigate to the Data Sources tab in your Bold Report Designer.
  2. Click on the New Data Source button.
  3. Select the type of data source you want to connect to; this could be a database, a file, or a web service.
  4. Fill in the necessary details such as the server name, database name, username, and password.
  5. Click on the Connect button to establish a connection with your data source.

Step 2: Creating a Data Set

The second step in creating a report is to establish a data set from the data source.

  1. Navigate to the Data Set tab in your Bold Report Designer.
  2. Click on the New Data button.
  3. Select the data source you want to connect to; this could be a database, a file, or a web service.
  4. Follow the steps outlined in Step 1 to create a data source.
  5. After creating the data source, click on the Create Dataset option.
  6. You will be redirected to the query designer UI where you can customize your SQL queries.

Step 3: Configuring Report items in the Design Panel

Once you have your dataset set up, you can start adding report items to your report.

  1. Navigate to the Design tab in your Bold Report Designer.
  2. Drag and drop the desired report item from the right-side panel.
  3. Select the type of report item you want to add; this could be a chart, a table, or a map.

Step 4: Configuring Dataset Fields to Report item

After adding report items to your report, you need to connect them to your data source.

  1. Click on the report item you want to connect to a data source.
  2. Map the fields in your dataset to the corresponding fields in your report item.
  3. Now, preview the report in our Bold Reports Report Viewer
